Do you have a leaky pipe? Whether you are hiring a plumber or taking on a DIY plumbing project, you might get confused when you decide what type of plumbing pipe you should use to fix the leak. Take note that the right choice will keep water flowing throughout your building without any backlog while the wrong choice can cause some problems. In the same way that you need to choose the material to use for your floor access hatch, choosing plumbing pipes also requires that you need to know which type should be used for water supply, for sewer, for drainage, and even for the exterior. The choice depends on where they’re used and where they need to be installed.
There are many types of plumbing for both residential and commercial buildings. To get you acquainted with them, here are some plumbing pipes that are commonly used. PVC Pipe Polyvinyl chloride or PVC pipe is a drain or a vent line type. PVC gained its popularity because it is lighter and easier to work with than the traditional galvanized steel pipe. It is also moderately easy to install and requires only a hacksaw and miter box for cutting. This pipe glues together with solvents. Rigid Copper Pipe This kind of pipe is often used for water supply lines within the building. Rigid copper can be easily cut with a hacksaw or with a special copper tube cutter. This is great as a water supply pipe because it does not come with any health risks. PEX Pipe Cross-linked polyethylene pipe or PEX, is actually one of the newest and most popular pipes to grace the plumbing market. This pipe is used only for supplying water. PEX is a rigid pipe that is enough to withstand the pressure of water supply and still flexible enough to weave throughout walls, basements, ceilings, and crawl spaces. ABS Pipe Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene or ABS pipe is mainly used as a drain and vent line. This looks very much like a PVC pipe. However, this one is black and slightly softer than a PVC pipe. Flexible Copper Pipe Flexible copper pipe or tubing can be used for final runs to water heaters, some sinks, and refrigerators. This can be cut easily by a hacksaw and is used only for short runs. It is flexible because it can be bent to fit around corners. Galvanized Steel Pipe and Cast Iron These are two additional types of pipes that are sometimes found in older structures and are infrequently installed, mostly by do-it-yourselves. Galvanized steel pipe has been used in decades for drainage, water supply, gas supply, and any number of other purposes. While this pipe is actually still around, it is used less and is never used for water supply in new construction or remodeling projects. On the other hand, cast iron pipe was often used for sewer and drainage. This is still found in many homes and is viable until it rusts completely. Cast iron is difficult to cut and is also very heavy.
